Guardrail Nets, Individually Made to Measure (by the m²)

Guardrail nets, also known as side protection nets or scaffold nets, are mainly used for roof work. They are also used for work on platforms and in bridge construction and are used for direct fall protection of persons. They are mounted either in roof safety scaffolds or in the working level of facade scaffolds and can eliminate the need for intermediate uprights.

Which Standards Apply For Guardrail Nets?

The product standard EN 1263-1 is authoritative for guardrail nets and nets in roof safety scaffolds. The requirements for the use and assembly of guardrail nets are specified in DGUV regulations 201-011 and 201-023.

You can find more information on the applicable guidelines and standards on our info page Guardrail Safety Net Guidelines.

How To Install A Guardrail Net Or Scaffold Net?

Guardrail nets must be firmly mounted and must not hang loose. If they are used as a protective wall in roof safety scaffolds, the use of intermediate spars can be dispensed with. The net must comply with net class A2 according to EN 1263-1, which means that the mesh size must not be larger than 100 mm and the energy absorption when new must be at least 4.14 kJ.

Protective nets in roof safety scaffolds must be attached to the scaffold tubes on all sides. Ideally, they are attached to the scaffold tube mesh by mesh. According to DGUV information 201-023, it is also possible to dispense with mesh-by-mesh attachment and to attach the net to the edge at intervals of no more than 75 cm if the load-bearing capacity of the net attachment has been demonstrated in a dynamic test in accordance with EN 1263-1, Para. 7.11. The dimensions of safety nets may only be changed by the manufacturer. If the dimensions are changed, the net must be re-marked. A rockfall protection kit whose dimensions have not been changed by the manufacturer automatically loses its approval according to EN 1263-1.

Who Is Allowed To Assemble A Guardrail Net?

The person responsible for erecting, modifying and dismantling a scaffold is called the scaffold erector. This person is also responsible for the use of work equipment and protective equipment such as safety nets. The assembly of guardrail nets in the course of scaffold erection must be supervised by a competent person who acts as a supervisor.

Qualified persons are, for example, persons who have completed vocational training in the scaffolding trade and have sufficient practical work experience, scaffolders, certified foremen or persons who have comparable specialist knowledge and training in the building trade as well as sufficient practical work experience in scaffolding. The employer is responsible for assessing the suitability and selecting the supervising person.

You can find more information on the applicable guidelines and standards on our info page Guardrail Safety Net Guidelines.

Is It Allowed To Repair A Scaffold Net?

If defects are found in safety nets or net accessories, these parts may only continue to be used if a competent person has confirmed that safety is not impaired by the defects. Examples of safety-related defects are damaged net surrounds, torn meshes, damage to the supporting structure or damaged fasteners.

Damaged safety nets and net accessories may only be repaired by the manufacturer or by persons authorized by him. Only material that corresponds to the original material properties may be used for this purpose.
